Piano Forte

Here’s a new musical first to enjoy this year, the Roli Seaboard Grand. The new touch-sensitive keyboard allows musicians to manipulate digital sound like never before.

Designed by a Dalston-based technology start up, the keyboard uses SEA Technology, a disruptive platform sensor technology that is highly precise, information-rich and pressure sensitive.  It captures 3D gestures while simultaneously providing the user with tactile feedback.

Keys can be stroked to bend pitch and wobbled to create vibrato, essentially allowing user control of fundamental sound characteristics, such as sound, pitch, volume and timbre. With these new sonic possibilities, the keyboard provides an exciting new bridge between acoustic and electronic musical approaches. Now that’s music to our ears.

APPLE DEVELOPS NEXT GENERATION IWATCH

20130044215 may look like a meaningless sequence of numbers, however, in context, patent application no. 20130044215 could mark the emergence of a next generation watch. The patent number, which belongs to Apple, signifies the brand’s desire to protect its conception of a 'wearable accessory device’, which mounts a touchscreen on the user's wrist using the same technology as a slap wrap.

Rumours have been circulating for several months, suggesting the tech giant has been developing a form of smart-watch; however, Apple has made no comment on the claims. The disclosure of the patent application has further fuelled speculation. It also suggests that Apple has been working on its latest innovation for many years.

It is widely speculated that the iWatch will include music browsing and phone call information. The device will also be compatible with an iPhone or iPad through Bluetooth technology. Other anticipated features include a touch screen LED and a rechargeable battery using kinetic technology generated by the wearer’s wrist...

Smart luxury by Vertu

Luxury smartphone maker Vertu is rumoured to be launching a flashy new Android phone – the first in its range.

Vertu, the high-end partner brand of Nokia is known for making premium phones dripping with precious metals and luxury sparkle. Unlike most smartphones, Vertu phones are handcrafted and incredibly expensive.

The new Vertu smartphone - rumoured to be called the Constellation Ti - is suggested to be modelled on an old Nokia slide phone, the 8800.  The Ti is expected to run on the Android version 4 operating system, rather than the Symbian platform. Experts predict its typical features will include an 800x400 resolution display and a standard 1.5 Ghz processor. If early rumours are correct it will also include NFC, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Some experts believe that certain tweaks to the model need to be made to set it ahead of its competitors, but one thing is certain; you’ll struggle to find bling like this anywhere else...

Patent drawings show a hybrid separable motion controller which goes one step further than those created by Sony’s counterparts. Clear future with Project Glass

For the past few years Google has slowly been dominating the technical world. The company leads the development of the Android mobile operating system, whilst also maintaining numerous desktop products and online productivity software. However all this has not stopped Google from continuing to push technological boundaries in the pursuit of more efficient and innovative software. Nothing demonstrates this better than their latest research and development program; Project Glass.

The basis of the project is to develop an augmented reality head mounted display, which exhibits information in a hands-free smartphone format, and interacts with the Internet via voice commands. In the current prototype the device records, streams and displays information through a small transparent screen above the user’s right eye, although the company has said it will add more functions over time. Though this technology may seem somewhat futuristic, it is not in itself a new idea...
